This is Pie 99 – a made from scratch, Cherry Berry Pie with hand sculpted, hand painted details. To see the baked version go the link to my website in my profile.
I had the great pleasure of getting to sculpt this pie in collaboration with N who also shared these words with her image:
“I have vaginismus and angiokeritoma of fordyce, two very common conditions that have made me feel like I was fighting with my vagina for comfort and cooperation. I used to grit through pain trying to be ‘normal’ for myself and my partner, while being the epitome of a dysfunctional pelvic floor. I also thought my purple dots would be seen as ugly and problematic. I felt so avoidant to look at my vulva, or even to touch it and have to confront the pain. It took a lot patience to respect and listen to what my body was telling me; that I can only be myself and be where I’m at.
My favourite characteristic of my vulva is my asymmetrical labia and I only wish I appreciated them sooner. Now closer to menopause than puberty, they’ll be changing before too long.
Removing shame, and sharing my experience with friends (and in therapy) lead me to identifying my conditions and tools to help. I hope I can help the next person who thought they were the only one.”
So many of us suffer in silence and feel terribly alone when we have issues with our bodies. The lack of open communication because of shame and taboo make it hard to approach others and sometimes can make it hard to find medical help.
According to the National Institutes of Health Studies analyzing health datasets show that women routinely wait longer between the onset of symptoms and an official medical diagnosis compared to men for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. In addition, and medical studies note that women experience higher rates of chronic pain and greater pain sensitivity. In addition, they are historically more likely to have their symptoms under-recognized, misattributed (e.g., to anxiety or stress), or under-treated. (Dartmouth Health)
Ending shame and stigma around our bodies leads to better physical and mental health.
