Pie 54
This is the last pie in Series 5 pairing flowers with vulva art.
“Dogwood flowers are connected to durability and the ability to withstand various challenges in life and are thus used by many cultures. Although the dogwood flower is small and delicate looking, it’s actually quite tough.” (florgeous.com)
When I started this series women in America had more rights.
It was started before Roe was overturned. Before the idea that librarians had to worry if sharing information about abortion might mean they abetted a crime, before the talk of keeping people from going to other states to get abortions, before memes about women being brood mares started appearing my feeds.
The dogwood seems even more fitting now than when I first chose it.

Baked Pie 54
I love it when the filling peeks through in the best places.
This doesn’t have anything to do with the content of my art, but more the type of thinking that is pervading our times:
There is a Christian legend that the dogwood used to be strong and tall and that the wood was used to crucify Jesus. God cursed the tree to be small and shrublike, yet blessed it with beautiful blooms. The flowers are shaped like crosses to remind us of the sacrifice.
“The Legend of the Dogwood Tree” probably originated in the U.S. early in the 20th century. Alas, Flowering Dogwoods are native only to North America. They are not native to the Middle East and would not have been growing in Jesus’ time.
It’s a nice story, but it was fabricated. Someone wanted to create a religious attachment to the tree for their own purpose.
